Croix schools discuss emergency response

After two scares at the end of last year - one natural and the other man-made - the governor requested that V.I. Education Commissioner LaVerne Terry establish new emergency response plans for the territory's schools, said St. Croix School Superintendent Gary Molloy.While each school maintains its own emergency response plan, the widespread flooding in November caused a districtwide emergency, Molloy said. Paul Brautmier, the hazardous material survey team leader. "Most schools design their own emergency response plans. But no district has created its own template.""Especially in our small community, it's definitely going to be a big step forward," he said. The V.I. Board of Education passed a measure in May 2010, requiring similar action from schools - each school to have a unique plan that falls within guidelines set by the board - but Molloy said he had not known anything about that until a recent meeting."We're going to have a discussion with Dr. Terry and the board and discuss what we've done," Molloy said. The National Guard facilitated the event Tuesday, encouraging the use of Google Earth and using the two disasters of 2010 as springboards, Jaschen said. In the end, the school's crisis team has a choice between two decisions: "Either to stay in place or to evacuate."In November, as rains inundated St. Croix, the decision was made to evacuate schools districtwide, which was an action that may have not been the best decision in hindsight, Molloy said.
