while the other expired on Sunday. The surviving one has now been taken
away to the zoo hospital for treatment.
Zoo director P K Verma said, "The zoo authorities are making every
effort to save the cub. We have been successful in rearing it for the
fourth day and six more days are crucial."
While the first cub died after falling under its mother, an autopsy
carried on the second cub's body failed to arrive at any conclusion.
"We were apprehensive that the mother was not capable of taking care of
her cubs and after a lot of discussions we decided to take it from the
mother for hand rearing," he said.
Authorities at the zoological park consulted the deans of
veterinary college Jabalpur, Srivasatava, and the veterinary science
department at Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) S K Singh for their

zoo in 2009.
BAU dean S K Singh said hand rearing a cub was a huge challenge.
"The mother becomes ferocious when she delivers babies and usually
becomes hostile to human presence," he said.
Wild animals are used to live in natural surroundings and in case
of a zoo there are ample chances of their developing some infection or
not being able to take care of their babies. "We found that Durga was
not lactating properly and as a result the cub died out of starvation,"
he said.
Veterinary doctors of the zoological park like Dinesh suggested
nutritious food for the mother and feeding the cub on goat milk. "We
were unable to administer medicines to Durga due to her strong
olfactory system. She rejects any food to which some medicine is
added," Singh said. He, however, expressed hope that the cub would
survive after its eyes open in the next six days.
