Pune, Kochi refuse to pay full franchisee fee

The two new IPL teams - Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warriors - seem to be heading for a showdown with the Indian cricket board (BCCI) over the payment of franchisee fees.

Sources in the IPL governing council said that both teams have paid only 75 per cent of their franchise fee and have withheld the remaining amount because they are playing only 14 of the 18 games that had been mentioned in the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document.

IPL had initially planned 94 matches which got reduced to 74 because of the hectic international calendar. The ITT has specifically laid out the same format to be played amongst 10 teams that was played by eight teams last year.

Sources in the board said the new teams are upset as they had bid for their teams at high rates under the impression that their share of revenue would come from nine home and away matches. Sources said BCCI would take up this matter in its next working committee meeting on May 27. They added that the two teams have been told by BCCI that their demands were invalid and no clause relating to reduction in fees existed in the franchisee agreement.
